On September 12, 2024, Nohona Health welcomed Direct Relief and a visiting group from one of Direct Relief’s partnering family foundations, whose generous contributions have supported wildfire response and recovery efforts across Maui. This service learning trip provided an immersive opportunity to learn firsthand about the impactful work of community-based organizations on the island.
The visit included a morning of mālama ʻāina (care for the land) at Kokololio, where participants worked side by side with Nohona Health staff and community members to plant noni, ʻōlena, and māmaki, important plants in Native Hawaiian traditional healing. This volunteer effort is part of Nohona Health’s ongoing commitment to restoring culturally significant plants and supporting community resilience in the aftermath of the 2023 wildfires.
Throughout the day, participants engaged with Nohona Health’s team to better understand the challenges and opportunities faced by Maui communities in disaster recovery, culturally grounded healing, and sustainable food practices. The experience deepened connections between local organizations and national partners, building stronger bridges for future collaboration.
“We are grateful for Direct Relief and their partners for not only providing critical funding for wildfire relief, but also for coming to our ʻāina to experience and support our community’s healing firsthand,” said Cory Lehano, Executive Director of Nohona Health. “Their willingness to learn and lend a hand alongside us highlights the importance of relationships in building a more resilient Maui.”
This service learning day reflects Nohona Health’s mission to integrate Native Hawaiian practices with innovative approaches to community health and wellness, while fostering partnerships that honor local knowledge and empower Maui’s recovery.
