ʻŌ.L.E.N.A Project

E malama ʻoe i ka ʻāina, e malama ka ʻāina ia ʻoe
(Take care of the land, and the land will take care of you)
Nohona Health presents the ʻO.L.E.N.A Project (Overcoming Loss through Exploration and Nurturing of ʻĀina). An innovative initiative designed to address the emotional and psychological aftermath of the 2023 Maui Wildfires. Grounded in Native Hawaiian cultural practices, ʻO.L.E.N.A seeks to nurture holistic healing by reconnecting individuals with the land (ʻāina) and traditional healing practices (lāʻau lapaʻau). Key program components include monthly cultural workshops and quarterly mea kanu (plant) distribution days, facilitated by a team of mahiʻai (caretakers) and supported by local partners. The program's staff and partners are all committed to delivering culturally sensitive mental health services. Curriculum experts and local practitioners will provide culturally specific content for workshops, ensuring relevance and authenticity.
About the Program
The OLENA project addresses wildfire-induced emotional trauma on Maui. We integrate traditional Hawaiian practices with innovation to boost resilience. We focus on youth mental health, offering culturally sensitive counseling and "return to ʻāina" workshops for holistic healing. Our aim is authentic community healing by reconnecting individuals to the land, preserving culture, and enhancing resilience.
