An alternative learning experience rooted in ʻāina and community
Powered by Nohona Health | In partnership with ʻĪao Intermediate School
Nohona Health presents the Mālama Kilohana ʻĀina Academy, an ʻāina-based alternative learning program, that empowers students through hands-on agricultural skills that emphasize sustainability, adaptability, and professionalism. Centered around hands-on, outdoor learning, the ʻĀina Academy blends academic instruction with cultural and environmental education to support student growth, healing, and connection.
Our vision is to create an inclusive and empowering alternative education program that nurtures belonging, confidence, and real-world skills, grounded in ʻāina and cultural practice. At Mālama Kilohana ʻĀina Academy, we believe every student deserves a meaningful path to graduation, future opportunities, and community contribution.

A new path for learners to grow, connect, and thrive.

Why It Matters
In the aftermath of the 2023 Maui wildfires, many students have faced displacement, disconnection, and challenges re-engaging with school. This program offers a safe, grounded space where students can reconnect with the ʻāina, build confidence, and develop real-life skills through meaningful, personalized learning.
Who It Serves
The Academy is designed for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at ʻĪao Intermediate School who would benefit from a smaller, hands-on learning environment. Students are referred through the school’s support team and must demonstrate readiness to engage in ʻāina-based alternative learning.
What to Expect
Students will participate in a mix of classroom instruction and outdoor experiences at Hōʻola, Nohona Health’s educational māla in Waikapū. Through this program, students strengthen academic skills while learning to care for the ʻāina and contribute to their community.
Celebrating Growth
Each session culminates in a student-led Hōʻike (showcase), where students share their experiences and growth with family and community members.
Growing a Movement
Mālama Kilohana ʻĀina Academy is a pilot program with long-term goals to expand into more schools and communities. Together, we’re cultivating a new generation of learners grounded in culture, purpose, and resilience.
