LAHAINA, MAUI — On October 26, 2024, Nohona Health marked a meaningful milestone by hosting its first plant distribution event in Lahaina, providing free mea kanu (plants) to community members as part of ongoing wildfire recovery and resilience efforts. The event took place in conjunction with the Trunk or Treat at the Lahaina Comprehensive Health Center, a festive gathering that brought families, community partners, and local organizations together for Halloween fun and community connection.
Participants at the event were able to select from a variety of plants, encouraging residents to cultivate their own ʻāina-based wellness practices and support the re-greening of Lahaina’s landscape after the devastating 2023 wildfires. By sharing plants like lāʻī, kūkui, ʻaʻaliʻi, wāpine, and many others, Nohona Health aims to empower families to reconnect with traditional Hawaiian healing.
“Our first plant distribution in Lahaina was a heartwarming success,” said Cory Lehano, Executie Director of Nohona Health. “It was incredible to see so many families excited to receive plants and join in the Trunk or Treat festivities. Events like this remind us how important it is to nurture both our ʻāina and our sense of community.”
The Trunk or Treat celebration featured a lively turnout with numerous community partners providing treats, resources, and engaging activities for keiki and their ʻohana. The event highlighted the strength and unity of Lahaina as it continues to heal and rebuild.
Nohona Health extends a heartfelt mahalo to all the partners, volunteers, and families who came together to make this event memorable and impactful.
